BANNER TERMS

Banner – Banner material is a flexible vinyl (fabric) that can be printed on or cut vinyl can be applied. Banner material comes in various weights such as 14oz for the traditional cut vinyl banner and 13oz for the traditional digitally printed banner. Banners are generally hemmed and grommeted. This helps in the hanging of the banner. The traditional banner material comes in various colors where the digital banner material is white. Both traditional and printed banners can have images on both sides of the banner. Both the traditional and digitally printed banners are good for indoors as well as outside.

Bleed – This where the color goes off the edge of the banner.

Digital Banner - Digital banner is a banner that is printed digitally. Which means the image is printed on banner material or vinyl like your 4 color printer you have at home. However our printed uses solvent ink which makes the print good for indoors as well as outdoors.

DPI - DPI stands for Dots Per Inch. We use this term to determine the resolution of an image. The larger the DPI generally the better the image.

Grommets – Banner grommets are the brass circles in the corners of the banners. Generally used to hang the banners.

Gussets – Additional material is added to the corners to strengthen your banner. This additional material is stitched into each corner of your banner. Gussets can be added to both traditional and digital banners. Banner gussets are stitched into the back of the banner. Therefore they are only good for single sided banners.

Hem – This is done to the edges of the banner to re-enforce it for hanging. There are 2 ways to hem a banner. One is with hem tape which is very strong and the other style is a stitch hem. Both are good methods of hemming your banner.

Mesh Banner – This banner material ranges from 7oz to 9oz. It has small holes in it for the wind to go through. These banners are good for outdoor use in windy areas. Note the image on these banners is not as sharp because of all the holes in the material.

Pole Pocket – This is a pocket typically at the top and bottom of the banner to slide a pole in. These are generally used for banner stands or if you are going to hang your banner from the top. See our pole pocket section and it will tell you how to determine the size of the pole pocket you will need in your banner.

Vector Art - Vector art is how the file is created or saved. Vector art allows us to resize a file and the image stays sharp. If you look at vector art without the colors all you see is outline of the images.

Vinyl Banner – Vinyl banner material comes in 2 finishes matte and glossy. Vinyl banner material is measured by weight which ranges from 9oz to 16oz. Most people print on 13oz vinyl banner material. The reason for the variety of weights is for the different applications of the banner. Example: single sided vs double sided banner the double sided banner material has a block out layer in the middle so the image doesn’t breed through to the other side. There are also different textures available in vinyl banner material.

Webbing – This material is put in the hem of a banner to increase the strength of the banner. Webbing can also be extended past the banner to be used as a rope. Webbing is only used on vinyl banners that have been stitch hemmed.
